What is the purpose of Civil Liability insurance?
In civil liability insurance the insurer covers the risk of the insured having to compensate any third party for any damages he/she may cause.

General civil liability insurance may cover different risks as follows:

• Any activity (game, gas apparatus assembly, etc.(;
• Any profession (lawyer, insurance intermediary, etc.);
• Family life cases (damages caused to third parties in the household or by a pet, etc.).

There are mandatory and optional areas covered by civil liability insurance.

Which civil liability insurance is mandatory?
There are several dozen types of mandatory civil liability insurance that are listed on the Portuguese Insurance Authority (ISP) website, at www.isp.pt.

What should the insured do in case of a claim?
In case of a claim, the policyholder or the insured must:

• Report the event in writing to the insurer within the timeframe set forth in the agreement or, if no timeframe is set forth therein, within eight days after having taken notice of the claim;
• Take the measures within his/her reach to prevent or mitigate damages.

Generally, what are the civil liability exclusions?
Usually, the civil liability insurance does not cover:

• Paying indemnities for sums paid because of any guaranty, rate or fine;
• Damage resulting from acts of terrorism, war, civil war, invasion, hostilities, uprising and labour disturbances (strikes, riots, etc.).
• Damage resulting from an accident that should be covered by another mandatory insurance, namely accidents at work or motor vehicle civil liability.
