Frequently asked questions about health insurance.

What does health insurance cover?
Health insurance covers risks that relate to the rendering of health services, as per the cover set forth in the policy conditions and the limits set out therein.

How does the cover operate?
It can be applied by reimbursing the policyholder for any expenses incurred in health care services, direct payment to health service providers or by the combination of both.

If the insured person receives a contribution from any social security system, the insurance covers only the portion of health expenses with no contribution.

Are pre-existing health conditions covered by health insurance?
Pre-existing health conditions that the insured person was aware of at the time of signing the policy shall be considered as covered by the insurance, unless expressly excluded from the policy. However it is normal that such conditions are excluded under the terms of the policy.

Furthermore, the policy may specify a grace period of one year, at the most, concerning the cover of pre-existing diseases.

What should I do in case of an accident or disease?
The policyholder and the insured person must:

• Advise the insurer of the accident or disease circumstances and consequences;
• Follow any prescriptions of the attending doctor;
• If required, be subject to examination by an insurer-appointed doctor;
• Supply evidence of expenses incurred in prescribed and required health care;
• Whenever possible, request the insurer's prior approval for hospitalization.
